An Anglican Alliance meeting of the Burundi Round Table at Church House on 20th January considered the present situation and planned the way forward. It reported that the worldwide prayer support has been valued by the Church in Burundi. The main insecurity is in the capital, Bujumbura, with violence perpetrated by police, army and young people/demonstrators. Up-country life is 80% normal. During daytime, the situation seems calm, but overnight shooting and grenades can be heard. Long term it will be vital to provide training to the police and other security forces to be a competent force that is felt to protect the population. Peace talks need an inclusive dialogue focussing on peace and security. Only truly inclusive talks can secure peace. Dialogue needs to include all political parties, women, faith groups and civil society. Ombudsmen should follow up and check the implementation of agreements which should be backed by the international community.

On Sunday, 14th February Rev’d Dr Sarah Hills, Canon for Reconciliation Ministry at Coventry Cathedral, will speak about Burundi at the All Age Worship.
